Is the largest university in Europe, and ranks among the first in the world by number of students.

Founded in Rome on April 20, 1303 by the will of Pope Boniface VIII. Today it has 21 faculties, 21 museums, 155 libraries and over 130 across departments and institutes. In the world ranking of universities prepared by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University for the first time in 2004, then in 2006 La Sapienza is the most prestigious Athenaeum Italy and the only Italian college in the top 100 universities in the world. In the ranking of European universities is ranked 34th, ahead of some other famous institutes such as Frankfurt. The current rector, from 2004 to 2008 is Professor Luigi Frati.
La Sapienza suffered several crises during the years of the First World War, because of the disagreements between supporters of interventionism and neutrality.
